Junior ‘B’ Football Championship: Portlaoise 2-9 v Rosenalis 3-1

Portlaoise 2-9
Rosenallis 3-1

Portlaoise booked their place in the Junior B Football Championship quarter-final with a hard-earned victory over Rosenalis this evening, coming through a tough encounter played in damp and greasy conditions.

Portlaoise made the better start and went into the interval holding a 1-5 to 2-1 lead. The crucial breakthrough came midway through the first half when Rory Tully found the back of the net, giving Portlaoise a platform to take control of the contest.

The second half was a real battle, with the difficult conditions making clean football and scores hard to come by. Portlaoise, though, showed great resilience and determination to keep their noses in front.

Paddy Reddin then produced the decisive moment, finding the net to give Portlaoise the cushion they needed. Rosenalis responded with a goal from the penalty spot, but that turned out to be their only score of the second half as Portlaoise dug deep defensively to see the game out.

The final whistle brought a 2-9 to 3-1 victory and a place in the Junior B Championship quarter-final, which is likely to take place next Tuesday in Rathleague.

It was a proper night in the trenches for Portlaoise, made even more challenging by the absence of their manager and leader, Ger Egan. The players and management deserve enormous credit for stepping up, showing the character and togetherness required to get over the line in difficult circumstances.

A big well done to everyone involved. The quarter-final awaits.
