Portlaoise 4-8
Portarlington 3-11
Portlaoise and Portarlington shared the spoils in an entertaining U13 Football League Division 1A round 5 encounter in McCann Park, Portarlington, yesterday evening.
In a game that ebbed and flowed throughout, Portlaoise showed tremendous character to battle back from seven points down during the second half. Faced with a sizeable deficit, the visitors refused to panic and gradually worked their way back into contention through a combination of determined defending and clinical finishing in attack.
The turnaround was all the more impressive as Portlaoise not only erased the gap but went on to open up a four-point lead at one stage, appearing to have seized control of the contest. However, Portarlington responded strongly themselves and finished the game with a flourish to ensure the sides could not be separated at the final whistle.
With both teams contributing 3-11 and 4-8 respectively, the scoreboard reflected the competitive nature of a high-quality contest that provided plenty of excitement for those in attendance.
While there was disappointment at not quite seeing out the victory after such a spirited comeback, there were plenty of positives for the Portlaoise players and management to take from a performance that showcased resilience, teamwork and determination throughout the hour.
