Raheenabrogue won the replay by 1-3 to 0-4 played at The Hollow on 16 December 1906 with Jack Delaney (Stradbally) as referee. Maryborough objected on two grounds (1) the referee had made a bet and (2) the illegal constitution of the Raheenabrogue team. The appeal was the principal business before the County Board meeting held at Mountrath on Sunday 13 January 1907 at which Mr. J. Miller presided. The referee, Jack Delaney, (Stradbally) denied having made a bet and the committee upheld the referee’s report on a 16 votes to 5 majority. On the second ground of objection that Andrew Carroll had played for Ballyroan juniors and Raheenabrogue senior “it was proved” that it was another Andrew Carroll who played for Raheenabrogue. The chairman accordingly awarded the match to Raheenabrogue. Mr. Bunworth (Maryborough) gave notice of appeal to the Leinster Council. (The Nationalist, 19 January 1907). The appeal appears to have been successful and while no minutes exist for the Leinster Council meetings of the period it is noted that they were billed as champions in the preview for a big tournament in Clonaslee which featured three teams from King’s County (Offaly) against three from Queen’s County (Laois). The Nationalist of August 31, 1907 reported: “The Geashill football team, the champions of King’s County, for several years, crossed the frontier to try conclusions with Maryborough, the champions of Leix and Ossory … Geashill, in green and white jerseys and white knickers and Maryborough with red and green over white …” Maryborough won by five points to two. Laois GAA historian, Jack Hyland, confirms that Maryboro were awarded the title and comments “Raheenabrogue are listed in the records as champions but the evidence suggests that Maryborough are entitled to the honour”. He has in his possession a medal indicating Maryboro as the champions for 1906 which is a further confirmation.
**The delayed county football final of 1897 between Maryborough and Wolfhill was fixed for Ballybrophy for Saturday, 28 February, 1898. Maryborough travelled by train but Wolfhill refused to travel. The county committee on a five to four vote decided that the game should be refixed for Boley rather than Branra on Low Sunday. Maryborough appealed to Central Council and they directed that the Maryborough club be paid half their expenses for the abortive Ballybrophy trip before the game be allowed to go ahead. The expenses were not paid and Maryborough were awarded the title for 1897 (The Nationalist, April 16, 1898)
*Maryborough (Portlaoise) and The Heath amalgamated in 1891. At a joint meeting of the clubs held on 19 April, the officers’ positions were doled out. The President and Vice-President came from The Heath and secretary and treasurer from Maryboro’. The meeting supported a resolution that “we the members of the amalgamated clubs of Maryborough and the Heath, while playing in the championship together promise to take no part in the present political crisis … and we urge on all Gaels in the county to meet as Gaels and not let the present crisis interfere with carrying out of their old national pastime”.
