Decade Overview

A Time for Consolidation

The 1990s were among the most successful and transformative decades in the history of Portlaoise GAA. Building on the foundations laid during the golden years of the 1980s, the club remained a dominant force in Laois football and hurling while continuing to invest heavily in its facilities, structures and future development. The decade saw Portlaoise teams competing for honours at every level, with county titles, Féile successes and underage championships becoming a regular feature of club life.

The decade highlighted the growing strength of the club’s underage system. Minor, Under 21 and juvenile teams enjoyed significant success across both football and hurling, producing a new generation of players who would go on to represent the club and county with distinction. Portlaoise schools also contributed greatly to player development, with CBS teams achieving notable success and reinforcing the club’s reputation as one of the county’s leading nurseries of talent.

The decade also witnessed significant milestones beyond the traditional football and hurling fields. Camogie continued to grow and achieved a historic breakthrough with the section’s first championship success, while new generations of players emerged across all codes.

1990

AGM

At the annual general meeting held on Friday 13th Jan 1990, Dick Sides stepped down as treasurer after 25 years in the position. Dick took up the position in 1965 and went on to be a highly popular and efficient official. Tributes flowed in from all sides when he announced his decision and praising his commitment to the club for a quarter of a century. The new treasurer is popular local business man Denis Kavanagh, whose father coincidentally occupied the position for many years in the ‘20s and ‘30s. Tributes were equally glowing for former secretary Bill Phelan, who held the post for almost 20 years and relinquished it on becoming county chairman. It was indeed his position as county supremo that caused him to miss his first AGM in a long number of years. He was in Croke Park with other county officials fighting Laois County Board’s appeal at management committee level against the Leinster Council’s decision to reduce penalties on Camross as a result of the fracas in the previous year’s senior hurling final replay. P.J. Nealon took over as secretary.

In his address to the meeting chairman, Peadar Molloy, pleaded that a renewed effort be made in the nineties to keep up the unprecedented success of the eighties when six senior football and six senior hurling titles were won as well as provincial senior football titles and the coveted All Ireland football crown. He said a big effort was needed with football at juvenile level. Juvenile secretary, Mick Reynolds, reported on the club’s under age activities.

The number of selectors on the senior football was reduced from five to three with Paddy Fitzpatrick joining trainer Bernie Conroy and Jas O’Reilly. The number of hurling selectors remained unchanged.

Portlaoise senior football champions 1990

Senior Football

The senior footballers advanced to the county final with wins over Ballylinan by 3-8 to 2-4, Portarlington on a score line of 0- 14 to 1-7 and St Josephs in the semi-final, 1-9 to 2-5. In the final Portlaoise faced Ballyroan. A great defensive display by the ‘Town’ side laid the foundation for a record 20th title for the town.

Portlaoise were 0-4 to 0-2 ahead when they worked the ball in from the right. Noel Prendergast found Jimmy Lewis who tried to get a shot on goal but his path was blocked the ball broke and captain, James Fahy, rushed in to score the vital goal. Portlaoise led 1-6 to 0-3 at half time and closed out the game in the second half despite the efforts of Ballyroan to run out 1-9 to 0-8 winners.

Bernie Conroy, team trainer, said after the game that Portlaoise had played their best football of the year in the final. He also hoped to have Tom Prendergast (out for a long period with a broken leg) back soon. Tony Dunne may not be available however as he has future commitments with Home Farm soccer club, he added.

AGM

At the AGM held in mid-January, a year of contrasting fortunes was recalled. Bernie Conroy stepped down as S.F. trainer but he remained a selector along with Jas. O’Reilly and Paddy Fitzpatrick. Mick Lillis took over as trainer. Senior Football

Portlaoise were beaten in the first round of the senior football championship by St. Josephs in Timahoe on a score of 1-13 to 0-6 and went into the losers group. Victories over Annanough 1-11 to 1-6, Ballylinan 2-7 to 1-7, Ballyroan 0-10 to 0-7 and Timahoe 1-15 to 2-4, saw them advance to the semi final where they beat Emo 0-8 to 0-6.

In the county final against a fancied Portarlington team, Portlaoise explored their vast reserves of heart, courage and, perhaps most of all, pride to remain county champions. Portlaoise had a slender 0-5 to 0-3 lead at half-time despite having played with the strong wind. In the second half, the defence stood up manfully to the Port attack and some great forward play from veteran, Tom Prendergast, who scored 3 points from play, an exceptional return in the conditions, ensured another senior title for the ‘Town’. Final score: Portlaoise 0-7; Portarlington 0-5.

After the game Portlaoise half back and trainer Mick Lillis said “we dug deeper than ever before”.

In the final Portlaoise captured their ninth title. The score stood 0-5 apiece at half time but a great second half performance by Portlaoise and a goal scored by captain Seamus Plunkett five minutes into the restart set the town on the road to an easy victory. Niall Rigney gave a man of the match performance at midfield. Final score: Portlaoise 1-14; Clonad 0-7. Team trainer and centre back Cyril Duggan said after the game: “I feel more relief than joy at the moment. We have had 75 training sessions since the 27th February and have played 20 matches up to today.” Paddy Bergin, the Clonad chairman, praised the Portlaoise players. “It was a fine sporting game he said.

In the second half, Ballinakill proved the better team despite two fine points for Portlaoise from Fergus Dalton. Ballinakill went on to bridge a 21 year gap to win their second minor title. 1992

AGM

At the AGM held at the club centre, a very successful year in which many championships were won including the senior double was reviewed. Portlaoise are the only club in Laois to ever achieve the senior double, a feat they have now performed on four occasions.

Secretary, Frank Keenan, who was returned unopposed in his report said many people believed the hurlers defeat the previous year was the end of a golden era for Portlaoise hurling but how wrong they were proved. Back they came to take the club’s ninth senior hurling title and serve notice that the era is far from over. In the senior football, very few observers held out much hope for Portlaoise but once again the footballers showed they are a force to be reckoned with at all times by beating a fancied Portarlington team in the final to annex the club’s 21st title. The chairman, Peadar Molloy, called on members to make 1992 an even more successful year on and off the field.

Senior Football

A disappointing year for our senior footballers after wins over Spink 1-9 to 1-8, Courtwood 1-11 to 0-5 and Ballylinan 4-10 to 1-9, they relinquished their crown losing out in the semi-final to St. Josephs by 1-5 to 0-6.

After a dull first half Portlaoise, having had wind advantage, led by 0-4 to 0-3 at half time. Within four minutes of the restart St Josephs had secured the only goal of the game and the decisive strike of the hour from Michael O’Brien. Portlaoise were denied two clear goal chances and this knocked the sting out of the Portlaoise attack. Mistakes allowed St Josephs in for further points and they ran out deserving winners

Senior Hurling

Portlaoise lost out in the first round to Clonad 2-8 to 1-4 but came back through the losers group with wins over Castletown 8-17 to 0-9, Rathdowney 2-13 to 1-6 and The Harps in the semi final by 1-9 to 1-7 to qualify for another county final. They faced Clonad in the final and after leading by six points at half time looked booked for victory. A power packed second half from Clonad and a fantastic will to win in the last five minutes enabled them to lift the O’Keeffe cup for the 14th time ending a 22 year wait on a final score of 0-16 to 2-7.

“From our point of view and the way we played we didn’t deserve to win”, said Seamus Plunkett trainer of the Portlaoise team. “Our defence did so well for so long but we weren’t winning the ball cleanly in attack and cracks obviously began to show. I was disappointed with the way we played but I’m happy for Clonad and they fully deserved the win.”

Junior Football

Portlaoise had a great year at junior level. They had a 2nd replay with Rosenallis at the semi final stage eventually winning 4-7 to 1-8 and faced a fancied St Manmans side in the final who hammered Kilcavan in the semi-final. Down to 14 men for the last half hour, Portlaoise, after laying the foundation of victory with three clinical goals in the first half, produced a point taking spree to lift the junior title which they last won in 1988. Portlaoise took the lead on the 10th minute with a great move which Pat O’Brien finished for a goal and they ran out deserving winners by 3-9 to 0-12.

Graiguecullen ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-8.

Portlaoise had in Brian O’Leary at midfield one of the best players on view but relied to much on the free taking of Barry Dunne whose accurate left boot accounted for six of their eight points. Nigel Fox at centre forward also impressed.

Second national Féile Peile na nÓg title

Portlaoise juvenile football reached the national stage once again in 1992 when the club secured its second Féile Peile na nÓg national football title.

Having first captured national Féile honours in 1983, another exceptional generation of young footballers carried The Town colours with distinction.

The national final took place in Páirc Tailteann, Navan, where Portlaoise produced a dominant display to defeat Four Masters of Donegal by 2-8 to 0-1.

1993

AGM

At the Portlaoise AGM held in early January, Secretary, Frank Keenan, expressed his disappointment at the loss of the two senior crowns in 1992.But there was some success namely the winning of the Junior ‘A’ football championship and the Div 4 ACFL title, he said.

Regarding finances General Treasurer, Teddy Fennelly, called for extra support from club members to clear the debt and to begin major plans for the development of club facilities. The accounts showed a happier picture than 1991 with a profit of €6707 for the year. Although there were no major increases in income, gains were made in expenses being cut in almost all categories.

Secretary of the Juveniles, John Costello, reviewed a successful year for the club with pride of place going to the U14 footballers and the U16 hurlers, both championship winners with the U14’s going one better and winning a Feile title as well. The lady footballers also won the county junior football title.

It was later confirmed that Kieran Brennan former Kilkenny All Ireland double winning forward in 1982/83 was appointed as hurling trainer. Brennan was winner of a number of National League titles, last won in 1987. He is a brother of the then Kilkenny County Board Chairman, Nicky Brennan, who went on to become GAA President, and was still playing club hurling for Conahy Shamrocks at intermediate level.

Bill Phelan passing causes major shock

The club was shocked at the unexpected death of Bill Phelan on 10th May 1993.He was closely involved with the GAA from his school days and won a county minor football medal with Portlaoise in 1961.But it was as a team coach and administrator that he blazed the trail in the association to which he dedicated the best part of his life. Bill was secretary of the Portlaoise club for twenty years and he trained numerous teams from the club to win county and national honours.

Senior Hurling

The senior hurlers under new trainer, Kieran Brennan, had wins over Borris-in-Ossory 0-13 to 1-6, Errill 2-12 to 2-8, Rosenallis 5-13 to 0-9, lost to Rathdowney 2-6 to 0-11 but still qualified for the knock out stage. In the quarter-final they beat Clonad 2-18 to 0-8 and Clough Ballacolla in the semi final 1-13 to 0-5.They met old rivals Camross in the final. A last minute point from John Taylor gave Portlaoise a draw 2-10 to 1-13 in what was a disappointing final.

Camross looked to have won it when they overcame conceding two goals in the opening five minutes of the first half to carve out a three point lead with a little over three minutes of normal time remaining. But points from Declan Hearns then a Niall Rigney free on the stroke of time and the crucial score by John Taylor left Portlaoise breathing a huge sigh of relief to escape this one.

Portlaoise: John Hanniffy, John Gleeson, John Bohane, Noel Rigney, Des Rigney, Cyril Duggan, Eamon Murphy, Niall Rigney (0-6 with 5 from frees, 1 from 65), Christy Dunphy, Liam Bergin, Declan Hearns (0-1), Paul Bergin, Pat Critchley (1-1), John Taylor (0- 1), Tom Fitzpatrick (1-1). Subs: Seamus Plunkett, Mickey O’Sullivan.

Referee: J.J. Bailey

In the replay Camross captured their 20th title by winning 1-13 to 2-9.A goal from a 21 yard free three minutes into injury time by Niall Rigney reduced the deficit to one point but time ran for Portlaoise. The Portlaoise defence played well over the hour. They had a great start and were level at half time 1-4 to 0- 7 but their attack however did not play up to expectations.

Portlaoise: John Hanniffy, John Gleeson, John Bohane, Noel Rigney, Des Rigney, Cyril Duggan, Eamon Murphy, Niall Rigney (1-4,1-3 frees), John Taylor (0-1), Liam Bergin (0-2), Declan Hearns, Paul Bergin (0-1), Pat Critchley, Seamus Plunkett,Tom Fitzpatrick (1-1). Intermediate Football

Losses to Arles 3-14 to 2-4 and The Harps 2-10 to 1-4 ended their interest in the championship.

Junior Hurling

In the junior hurling championship, Portlaoise beat favourites Shanahoe in the semi final 1-13 to 0-8 to qualify for the final against Ballypickas. It took three and a half hours of splendid hurling before Portlaoise finally emerged victorious. In the first game the final score was Portlaoise 1-9 to 2-6, first replay 2-13 apiece and second replay Portlaoise 3-11 to Ballypickas 3-8.

In the latter game played at Colt, Portlaoise raced into a fourteen point lead in the first half playing with the wind but plucky Ballypickas pulled it back to three points. Although Portlaoise were pre match favourites for the final against old rivals, Camross/Kyle, their challenge fizzled out in the second half. This match was notable for the contribution of the Camross/Kyle red haired corner forward, Seamus Kennedy, who scored three goals and seven points.

Camross/Kyle led 2-3 to 1-3 at half time. It was still anybody’s game at the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter Camross/Kyle pulled away to run out convincing winners on a score of 4-9 to 1-5.

1994

AGM

At the AGM held on 16th Jan 1994 at the club centre members reviewed a very busy year. The Juvenile club had one of its most successful winning national Feile na nGael and county titles in hurling and virtually sweeping the boards in under age football competitions.

The wins of the junior hurlers and minor footballers were warmly praised but the defeats in both senior competitions were a major disappointment. A lengthy discussion took place on plans for 1994 after which both outgoing senior trainers Mick Lillis in football and Kieran Brennan in hurling were reappointed.

Life President, Fr Matt Walsh, said he was very proud to be associated with such a strong and active club. He congratulated the club on having such dedicated officials and such talented players. He assured members of his continuing support.

Chairman, Peadar Molloy, spoke of the great contribution the former secretary, the late Bill Phelan, had made to the club over many years and said his loss to the club was enormous. He revealed that a fitting tribute would be made to his memory in the near future.

General treasurer, Teddy Fennelly, reported that the club’s financial position was better than at any time over the past decade. There was an excess of £17000 of income over expenditure.

Club secretary, Frank Keenan, noted that 12 acres were acquired and a lesser parcel of land disposed of in an excellent deal brought to fruition during the year. Overall 1994 was a very disappointing year during which no adult competition in Hurling or Football was won.

Senior Hurling

The team had wins in the group stage of the championship over Kilcotton 2-16 to 0-9, Clonad 1-10 to 0-7, a draw with Errill 1-14 to 2- 11, a quarter final win over Rosenallis by 1-16 to 0-8 but lost out at the semi final stage to Clonad on a scoreline of 0-13 to 0-9. In the semi-final against Clonad, Portlaoise lined out without Cyril Duggan which proved to be a huge loss.

Clonad looked hungry and eager to reclaim their place in the county final wheras Portlaoise looked ragged and inconsistent particularly from midfield up.

Clonad fired over five points in a ten minute spell in the second half to Portlaoise’s lone response which effectively sealed the outcome of this semi-final.

The past week was one to remember for him as a few days earlier he celebrated his 80th birthday with a big family get-together. Secretary, Peter Fennell, noted in his annual report that by previous standards set by the club 1997 was not a good year. The lowlights included losing the senior football championship and league finals, losing to Castletown in the senior hurling semi-final, failure to field Intermediate and Junior “A” football teams and lack of support from some members in fund-raising activities.

A win over St Josephs by 0-10 to 0-8 and a draw with The Rock at 6 points apiece, with further wins over Emo 5-15 to 1-3, O’Dempseys 1-9 to 0-8 and The Heath 3-15 to 0-5, qualified Portlaoise for the county final against Stradbally who had not won the senior title since 1941.

In the final Portlaoise dominated the game for long periods and Stradbally also had to contend with a missed penalty in the first half. Portlaoise led by four points with 13 minutes left but Stradbally put in a storming last 10 minutes scoring 2-4 to claim the title on a score of 2-10 to 0-10.

Senior Hurling

Portlaoise drew with Rathdowney 2- 13 to 3-10 and also drew with Camross 2-12 apiece. They beat Clonad in the quarter-final 3-19 to 1-4 but were beaten, however, at the semi-final stage by Castletown 2-16 to 1-13.

Portlaoise conceded two first half goals yet with fifteen minutes remaining were only one point behind at 2-8 to 1-10.The loss of captain and midfielder, Des Rigney, early in the game did not help their performance. The final ten minutes saw Castletown double score Portlaoise and they ran out winners by 2-16 to 1-13.

Under 21 Football

Wins over O Dempseys 1-12 to 0-7, The Heath 0-11 to 1-7 and Sarsfields in the semi-final 1-13 to 0-7 qualified Portlaoise for the final against Stradbally Parish Gaels. The final which was played in February 1998 at Portarlington took place in driving rain and atrocious underfoot conditions.

Despite the conditions Portlaoise played some great football and led 0-11 to 0-3 at half time. Facing the wind in the second half their defence held firm and they added five points to their tally to run out convincing winners on a scoreline of 0-16 to 1- 7.

Portlaoise dominated the game from the start and despite playing against a strong wind in the first half led 2-9 to 0-4 at half time. Growing Pains at Fr. Browne Avenue

By the late 1990s Portlaoise's facilities were struggling to cope with demand. A famous incident during senior hurling training under Seamus "Cheddar" Plunkett highlighted the problem when every available playing area was occupied and the senior hurlers were forced to abandon plans for a pitch session and instead complete a road run around the town while waiting for a juvenile championship match to finish. The episode became a symbol of the growing pressure on the club's facilities.

Portlaoise senior hurlers celebrate county championship success in 1998 before reaching the Leinster Club Final

Senior Hurling

It was now seven years since Portlaoise won the senior championship. Early wins over Borris in Ossory 2-18 to 0-2 and Castletown 2-10 to 1-10 and a loss to Rathdowney 3-11 to 2-10, qualified Portlaoise for the semifinal where they beat Clonad 2-5 to 0-7, in dreadful conditions – the vital goals coming from Noel Rigney and Eamon Fennelly.

In the county final, Portlaoise faced The Harps. The Harps opened with the breeze playing into the town goal. They led at half time by 3 points at 0-8 to 0-5. Portlaoise drew level after 17 minutes of the second half and in a nail-biting finish a couple of late points meant the town emerged winners on a scoreline of 0-13 to 0-11.

In the Leinster club championship, Portlaoise received a walk over in the 1st round from Trim (Meath). They had a great win over Kilkenny champions Graigue Ballycallan in the semi-final on a scoreline of 6 pts to 5 pts.

This game was played in Carlow and a heroic defensive display especially meant Portlaoise were into a provincial hurling final for only the second time in their history.

In the final against Rathnure (Wexford) played at Nowlan Park in dreadful conditions Portlaoise led by two points after 20 minutes play but a goal by Rathnure before half time gave them a lead of 1-7 to 1-4 at the break. Despite a huge effort in the second half, Portlaoise failed to convert possession to scores in the appalling conditions and lost out on a final score of 1-13 to 1-6.

Senior Football

Lost opening game to Emo 1-8 to 0- 5, beat St. Josephs 1-12 to 0-13 but lost out in the quarter-final to The Heath 1-9 to 1-7. In this game Portlaoise had an early goal from Kevin Fitzpatrick and led at half time 1-6 to 0-5. An injury to Mick Lillis early in the second half curtailed his influential role at full forward but they still led up to the closing minutes when The Heath were awarded a penalty which Mick Lambe converted to leave them winners by 1-9 to 1-7.

Portlaoise: John Hanniffy, Eoin Bland, Cyril Duggan, Padraig Malone, Ollie Fennell, Colm O ‘Keeffe, Colm Parkinson, Enda Coleman, Mark Brophy, Diarmuid Mullins, Tom Conroy, Niall Collins, Michael Fennelly, Mick Lillis, Kevin Fitzpatrick. Subs: Niall Rigney, Declan Daly, Owen Delaney.

The final was nip and tuck all the way. Portlaoise led 0-5 to 0-4 at half time but were one point in arrears with time almost up then John Fennelly fired over the equaliser to deny Ballyroan.

Final score 11 points apiece.

Under 21 Football

Wins over St Josephs 0-7 to 0-6 and Ballylinan Gaels 3-11 to 1- 9 qualified Portlaoise for the final against Stradbally Parish Gaels. This final was not played until late 1999 due to county teams late involvement in their respective championships.

Minor Football

Wins over O Dempseys 2-13 to 1-6, The Heath3-13 to 0-3 and Abbeyleix 2-14 to 0-5, qualified Portlaoise for the county final.

Because of a major dispute on the other side of the draw with objections and counter objections taking place they had to wait until July 1999 to know who their opponents were.

The long wait did not affect Portlaoise as they coasted to a very easy win over eventual finalists Ballylinan Gaels. The final scoreline read Portlaoise 2-10; Ballylinan Gaels 1-6.

AGM

After 15 years as chairman, Peadar Molloy stepped down and was replaced by Niall Kavanagh. Peader had led the club with dignity and initiative and this ensured that Portlaoise was amongst the top clubs in the Association and a powerhouse of GAA activity when he retired from the top position.

Tom Conroy was Laois footballer of the Year, Cathal Murphy won the junior football award while Colm Byrne won the minor hurling award.

First Discussions About Relocation

Recurring pitch shortages led club members to begin discussing the need for additional space. A proposal emerged to partner with Laois County Council and relocate to lands at St. Fintan's Hospital, combining new GAA facilities with a town park. Despite local support, the proposal failed to progress due to a lack of cooperation from the HSE.

Wins over The Rock 3-8 to 1-6, O’Dempseys 2-20 to 0-9, Arles- Killeen 1-15 to 1-7, Ballyroan Gaels 0-10 to 0-5 and Stradbally in the semi-final 0-12 to 0-9, qualified Portlaoise for the final against St Josephs.

In the final Portlaoise started slowly and despite playing with the wind in the first half trailed 1-7 to 0-8 at half time. A marked improvement in the second half saw them take the lead and hold off a St Josephs rally in the last ten minutes to run out deserving winners 1-13 to 1-11.

This was Portlaoise’s first title since 1991, a famine for the club considering their domination of Laois football over the last four decades.

This is the ‘Towns’ 22nd Laois senior football title a remarkable record for any club.

Top scorer was Ian Fitzgerald with a personal tally of 1-4.

Senior Hurling

Portlaoise beat Ballinakill 3-11 to 1-13 and drew with The Harps 1-11 apiece. In their next game an unusual situation arose when Errill conceded the game and Teddy Fennelly scored the easiest goal ever in the Laois Senior Hurling Championship.

They were brought to a replay by Clonaslee Gaels in the semi-final Portlaoise 0-10 Clonaslee 1-7, and won the replay Portlaoise 0-12 Clonaslee 0-9.

Intermediate Hurling

The intermediate hurlers qualified for the semi-final where they opposed hot favourites, Trumera who led early by 0-5 to 0-2 and led by 8 points to 5 pts at half-time. The decisive score arrived with just minutes to go when a defensive error allowed Trumera to shoot into an empty net. Portlaoise had a close in free in injury time but Paul Bergin’s well struck shot was brilliantly saved by the Trumera defence. Paul scored 1-6 o his side’s total. Trumera advanced to meet Rosenallis in the final on a 1-12 to 1-9 scoreline.
