Poem
You have heard of Heffo's Army, who brought Dublin to the fore, Of the mighty men from Kerry, who've won titles by the score; But I will sing of those young men, who won the county crown, I call them 'Phelan's Heroes,' sure they're heroes of The Town.
Chorus
Three cheers for Phelan's heroes, boys, who brought us back the crown, Three cheers for Phelan's heroes, sure they didn't let us down; In 'seventy-six they showed their worth, they really made their mark; They are the best in county Laois, they proved it in the Park.
I give you, first, their Captain bold, Mick Dooley is his name, With Eamon Whelan by his side, no strangers these to fame; And Mick Mulhall our 'goalie' sound, these three have won renown; They're three of Phelan's heroes, played for county and for Town.
Jim Harding, tall and strong and cool, full back of power and might, Sean Mullins, former Vincent's star, flanking on the right; And Kieran Daly, on the left, from boyhood with the Town; Three more of Phelan's heroes, who won back the football crown.
Jim Bergin, sound at centre-back, of strong and sturdy frame, With keen Noel Scully on the right, improving every game; And on the left, George Plunket bold, when we had cause to frown These defending Phelan's heroes saved victory for the Town.
At football and at hurling, too, a star young Bill Bohane, A son of one of the hurling 'greats,' that Gaelic sport has known. Liam Scully and Tom Prendergast, few backs could hold them down Attacking Phelan's heroes three, of old Portlaoise Town.
Of John Joe Ging, in praise I'll sing, 'Oldtimer' staunch and true, A dual performer for his club, aye, and for county too. Young Ber Conroy filled us with joy, and marksman Colm Brown, All stars of Phelan's heroes, who regained the county crown.
Well played there, young Pat Tynan, first year in senior grade, Oh! what a splendid goal was that, by brave Ger Griffin made, Pat Murphy and Sean Nolan and George Buggy 'Super Sub,' All helped as Phelan's heroes, to bring glory to our club.
Billy Bland and Martin Parkinson, Maher, Territt, Larkin, Dunne, Ted Fennelly, a former star, all share in victory won; Seamus Plunket, Martin Callaghan, and likewise Jerry Brown, Are all part of Phelan's heroes who brought back the football crown.
Let's praise again these gallant men, let's cheer their mentors, too; Through thick and thin, come loss or win, they gave allegiance true; They're all Bill Phelan's heroes, too, and helped to gain the crown And Bill is their great hero, he's the hero fo The Town.
